Binghamton Schools Honor Veterans

By WBNG News

Two local elementary schools pause to honor dozens of local veterans.

St. Thomas Aquinas and MacArthur Elementary Schools hosted Veteran's Day ceremonies.

As Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout tells us, the ceremonies show veterans their service is not forgotten, even by the youngest generations.

Students at MacArthur Elementary School in Binghamton display their patriotism while honoring more than 20 veterans.

And saluted a long distance guest.

Lieutenant Kyle Johnston joined the ceremony from Kabul, Afghanistan, via the internet.

"He was working right then and it was really cool," says fourth grade student Patrick Van Putte.

Johnston's participation fit in with MacArthur's school year theme, Around the World.

"It was very special. I saw a lot of people in tears. We knew that was going to bring, especially for the boys and girls, because they're studying that in class, studying it in the library," says Mareen Dahulich.

Students at St. Thomas Aquinas school also hosted a Veterans remembrance ceremony.

"I would like to say thank you for serving our country and thank you for keeping our country free," says second grade student Luke Redmore.

The school recognized nearly two dozen veterans who are also alumni of the school.

Each veteran in attendance was given a star necklace, made by the students.

"I think they need to know who has given us our freedom, who these men and women are that fought for our country many years ago and many of them have relatives that have also fought for our country," says Suzanne Miller, principal at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Veterans say a remembrance ceremony is extra special because they know their sacrifice and dedication is not forgotten.

"To have them understand that this time being away was again for the freedoms that we have here in the United States," says Marine Corp veteran Robert Neira.

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11th.

Some schools observed Veterans Day today because they will be closed for the actual holiday.
