Cartoonist Johnny Hart Remembered

By Gabe Osterhout

Friends remember 76 year old Johnny Hart for his sense of humor, and dedication to the community.

He worked with longtime friends to create the comic strips B.C. and the Wizard of Id.

Jack Caprio, a life-long friend, worked with Hart on both.

"Those were probably 33 of the best, happiest, funniest years that either one of us had. It was a dream job come true, we were able to work together every single day," says Caprio.

Hart is honored on the Binghamton Sidewalk of the Stars for his work as a cartoonist, but those who knew him say he deserves to be honored for his work in the community.

"Extremely generous to the community. He gave back to it in so many ways. To the charities, seldom refused anybody that came to him for permission to use the strip for a charitable purpose," says long time friend Dick Boland.

Characters from B.C. can been seen all over: Broome County parks, Broome County Meals on Wheels, the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the trophy for winning the B.C. Open.

Alex Alexander remembers going to Hart for help when the golf tournament first started.

Professional golfers have told Alexander they come to the B.C. Open for a chance to win this coveted trophy.

"It wasn't just a piece of glass. It was a character, it was different. In fact, when John Daly won, he also made me order a trophy that he bought to put in his club, he was so proud of it," says Alexander.

And friends are proud to know a man as funny, and caring as Johnny Hart.

The president of Creators Syndicate that distributes Hart's comic strips, says "B.C." will still be produced by Hart's family, who've been helping out for years.

Hart is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bobby, two daughters, Patti and Perri, plus 2 grandchildren, a brother and a sister, not to mention all his friends and fans.

Calling hours for Hart are Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 pm at Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home in Harpursville.

And then, a funeral service will be held Friday at 11am at the Nineveh Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Johnny.

Send them to: Nineveh Presbyterian Church Building Fund, post office box 115, Nineveh, New York 13813.
