32 people are arrested after Broome County completes a welfare fraud sweep.
The Broome County Security Case Integrity Unit says 32 people have illegally received welfare payments in the month of October.
It amounts to $50,846.69 in overpayments, which the county will seek to recover.
This investigation is part of an ongoing effort to crack down on welfare fraud.
In 2008, the Case Integrity Unit identified and recovered nearly 6 million dollars.
Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala says people who take advantage of taxpayer dollars will be held accountable.
Those arrested:
Emmanuel Baez (DOB: 8/26/83) Submitted falsified medical documents in an attempt to not participate in Welfare to Work requirements. Charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument.
Droranette Parker (DOB: 2/22/63) Received $3,441.00 in Public Assistance and Food Stamp benefits not entitled to during October 2005 to June 2008 due to failing to report income from Social Security Administration. Charged with Welfare Fraud 3rd degree.
Portia Manning (DOB: 3/22/81) Received $1,615.00 in Food Stamp benefits not entitled to during October 2008 to February 2009 due to failing to report income earned from employment. Charged with Welfare Fraud 4th and Offering a False Instrument 1st.
Randy Zimmer (DOB: 10/11/67) Received $982.00 in Food Stamp benefits not entitled to during September 2008 to March 2009 due to failing to report income earned from employment. Charged with Welfare Fraud 5th and Offering a False Instrument 1st.
Alease Downey (DOB: 7/14/88) Received $1,743.00 in Public Assistance benefits not entitled to during November 2008 to January 2009 while not a Broome County resident. Charged with Welfare Fraud – SSL 145.
Tanya Cochrane (DOB: 9/24/61) Received $1,750.00 in Public Assistance benefits not entitled to during December 2005 to October 2008 due to failing to report accurate household composition. Charged with Welfare Fraud 4th degree.
Karen Webster (DOB: 3/16/81) Received $2,608.12 in Daycare benefits not entitled to during August 2008 to February 2009 due to the submission of false daycare hours. Charged with Welfare Fraud - SSL 145.
