A non-profit organization in Tioga County needs help to stay afloat.

The Tioga County Habitat for Humanity is out of money.

It's former Treasurer's accused of stealing $50,000.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout tells us what Habitat needs to continue its mission to put families in homes.

A family in Candor will have to wait for their new home to be finished.

Tioga County Habitat for Humanity is building the home but it is broke.

27 year old David Heckman, the group's former treasurer, has been charged with grand larceny, allegedly stealing more than $50,000.

"It's been a very devastating situation for us as an organization. However, we need to move forward and complete these projects as we have ensured our host families they will be taken care of," says Fred McGuire, Chairman of the Tioga County Habitat for Humanity.

The Candor project is about 90% complete, but the home doesn't have a furnace installed.

Habitat does not have the money to buy the parts needed

"We have the furnace and most of the duct work. We need a little more duct work but we mostly need the parts to hook up the fuel oil tanks together to the furnace," says David Williams, construction committee for the Habitat for Humanity.

The family expected to be able to move into their new home by Christmas.

Now, they may have to wait until around Easter.

Some of the board members have taken out loans, just to cover the group's obligations.

"We also have found ourselves to be several thousands of dollars in debt with suppliers that were never paid, with insurances that were not paid, premiums that were not paid and taxes near default," says McGuire.

Now the group is hoping to get some help from the community.

It's asking for donations to help pay the bills and get families in need into brand new homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit group of volunteers that builds new homes for low income families to buy.

The families also promise to donate 500 sweat equity hours.

They can work on their home or another project.
