Starting November 24th, all children must ride in a child restraint until their 8th birthday.

The requirement has been until 7 years old.

Broome County Health Department Traffic Coordinator Christine Muss says the change is meant to keep children safer, longer.

Muss adds it really depends on your child's size.

"If you're child is under 4 foot 9 inches, under 100 pounds and can still fit in the child restraint you have for them, keep them in that child restraint or booster seat because they are safer in that seat." said Christine Muss Traffic Safety coordinator Broome County Helath Department

Drivers who do not comply with the child seat law can face a 25 to 100 dollar fine and 3 points on their driving record.

The other key is to make sure the seat is properly installed.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office and Health Department will hold a child safety seat check on December 9th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

You must call to make an appointment at 778-2807
