Upstate Shredding is the largest privately owned scrap metal company on the East Coast.

The Owego based company just purchased a facility in Syracuse to expand it's operations.

Even though business isn't booming right now.

Upstate Shredding hopes to be ahead of the curve when the economy picks back up.

"It's greatly affected by the economy but ya know, you have to you have to do things smarter and better and cut costs. You have to go out and look for business, you can't expect it to come to you. You just have to take advantage of other opportunities."said Vice President Steven Green.

Upstate Shredding shreds large metal objects down to sell the smaller pieces.

It also has facilities in Binghamton and Ithaca, and hopes to open a new one in Scranton next spring.
