More than a dozen families filed the suit against Houston-based Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation.

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection says Cabot is responsible for a handful of spills, which polluted 13 water wells.

The DEP ordered Cabot to pay more than 120 thousand dollars in fines.

Cabot agreed earlier this month to take steps to prevent a recurrence.

The company also promised to restore or replace the affected water supplies.

The problem was discovered January 1st when a well exploded at a home near Cabot's operations.

Cabot is one of many companies drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale.
