An Olympic Gold Medalist helps Binghamton University honor the achievements of women in athletics.

The BU Athletic's Club hosted the 5th annual Bearcats Celebrating Women's Athletics luncheon.

It recognizes Lady Bearcats while raising awareness of the benefits of playing a college sport.

Keynote speaker Kara Lawson spoke about the lessons she learned.

She played basketball for legendary coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee.

Lawson also won a WNBA championship and an Olympic Gold Medal.

"It's tradition, it's discipline, it's a commitment to work hard everyday you're out there and it's wanting to improve and wanting to get better so I think that message is a powerful message and like I said, it's something that translates over to wherever you are, whatever sport you play," says Lawson.

The luncheon at the Events Center is one of the biggest fundraisers for the athletics department, bringing in more than 50-thousand dollars since 2006.

Proceeds go toward the BUAC Women's Scholarship fund.
