Binghamton, NY(WBNG Binghamton) A local Congressman says America's future is tied to investing in technology.

Action News reporter Reed Buterbaugh tells us how a flight simulator company in Binghamton is stimulating job growth.

Binghamton Simulator Company received a 4.5 million dollar defense contract from the federal government.

Demand has risen for the cost savings for flight simulators to train helicopter crews.

"Ammunition, fossil fuels. It also saves on the airframe time itself. It will prolong the life of the aircraft which those equate to big dollars," said Greg Stanton, BSC's Business Development Director.

This simulator is going to the Navy and costs between six and eight million dollars. BSC is set to make two more for the Army and could make an additional 21. If all goes well it will double its workforce within the next two years.

"What we're doing is investing here in significant amount of money that is going to produce much, much more in the context of this economy," said (D) Maurice Hinchey, Congressman for New York's 22nd District.

Hinchey also says government should put resources toward bio-technology companies like Cell Preservation Services Incorporated.

"What that would mean is the expansion of jobs it would mean a business and an industry which would grow very dramatically," Hinchey said.

CPSI makes devices that freeze harmful tissue, which helps treat cancer.

"Not only are we doing technology development we're also trying to establish a medical device industry and serve as a seed organization with the region to bring in a new industry," said John Baust, President of Owego-based CPSI.

Baust says the Southern Tier's future is not tied to a single industry.

But instead should diversify to get the best results.

Binghamton Simulator Company has been operating for 20 years.

Its new contract with the Army will add initially 10 jobs to its workforce of 42.

The governments dedicated 12.5 million for the simulator development by Binghamton Simulator and other partners.
