Skateboarders in VanEtten wanted a place roll and jump.

So they skated over to the village board.

The swooshing sound of Skateboarders can now be heard here in VanEtten.

The village held a Grand Opening Ceremony for James E. Lampila Skate Park off Langford street.

As soon as construction started in June, the park began attracting skateboarders from Tioga County and beyond.

"There's plenty of things to do. It's perfect for a starter, or someone you know that likes to come out and skateboard," says Justin Pfaff of Horseheads.

State Senator George Winner applauded the kids and community for coming together on the project.

"If it doesn't come from the grassroots up it's not going to be the success that it is. This is something they really wanted to do. The kids went to the town board, the village board early, and asked for this to happen," says Winner.

The community says James Lamplia Skate park is strictly for the kids.

Now these kids will have a place to skate for years to come.

Before the park, kids would skateboard on the streets.

And a former Town Supervisor, James Lampila also built ramps for them on his property.

"My brother was big in the community. Everybody knew him, all the children knew him, and this is something he would have done," says George Lampila.

The village could think of no better way to honor him than name this the James E Lampila Skate Park.

The state provide a 20-thousand dollar grant for the Skate Park.

People in the village also raised money through several fund raisers.
