Need For More Downtown Binghamton Parking

By Erik Burling

Some businesses in downtown Binghamton say they're starved for parking.

Stores located near the Metrocenter, off Court Street, want the city to step up and help.

One potential option for more parking is dead, but the city says more spaces will be created.

If you walk into Metrocenter from Court street in Binghamton, you walk over stars on the Walk of Fame.

No cars allowed.

But, business owners along the courtyard say it should be opened up for parking.

"Parking is a critical part of any retail operation or any business today. Parking would help us immensely in just making us more accessible," says Tom Ellis of Ellis Brothers Furniture.

Ellis Brothers has been in Binghamton since 1900.

They say it's a challenge for customers to get to the store.

Next door, the Karma Café says more parking would be a big help.

"It should triple my business," says Ben Paley of Karma Cafe.

But, the hope for parking here has hit a dead end.

After what it calls a "quick look" the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study says it's simply inappropriate because there's not enough room, and no place to turn around.

The Mayor says turning the courtyard outside the Metrocenter into a parking lot could help these businesses.

But he says that plan is not feasible.

And is not in the best interest of the city.

Mayor Matt Ryan says there are plans for more parking elsewhere in the city's Court Street Gateway Project.

"This Court Street Gateway has been in process for a long time. And to change something like this. A very narrow space, just we've had people look at it. It's not cost effective to the amount of spaces you'd be able to put in there," says Ryan.

Ryan says the Court Street Gateway project will use diagonal parking spaces right on Court street, creating 7 or 8 more spaces.

Or, people can use the city's parking garages, even though some people think they're not as convenient.

If that MetroCenter courtyard was opened up for parking, some people thought the Walk of Fame could have been moved over to the Chenango River Walk.

Now, with no changes and no parking, it looks like the walk of fame will stay put.
