Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A homecoming celebration that second grader Ashlynn Orcutt will never forget.

What Orcutt thought was an assembly celebrating the 200th birthday of the Star Spangled Banner, turned into a surprise homecoming.

Her father, Sergeant Scott Orcutt, is a soldier with the United States Army.

It was an emotional moment for the father/daughter pair.

Students and staff at Vestal Hills Elementary School lined the hallways to give the soldier a warm welcome home.

Orcutt recalled all the times he was deployed in his 20 years of service. He was deployed when his daughter was born and said leaving is never easy.

"Skype. Skype or Facebook with them. When we were in Iraq the first time it was hard. This time was a little easier," Orcutt said.

An added welcome came from the Vestal Fire Department. Orcutt's a member of the volunteer department. The crew the students and staff to honor the soldier.
