Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A healthy heart sometimes depends on what you pick up in the grocery aisle. Weiss Supermarkets joined the American Heart Association for a lesson in healthy shopping.
Weiss raised more than $10,000 in February by selling red hearts at all Weiss locations in Broome county.
Employees presented the check to the American Heart Association before giving tours of cart smart shopping on Saturday.
The American Heart Association says heart disease is the nation's leading killer among men and women, but it is 80 percent preventable.
"So if we can teach the community how to take care of themselves through diet, exercise, not using tobacco, we can really improve our odds," said Gina Chapman, Southern Tier American Heart Association.
Chapman says those looking to make their supermarket trips healthier should shop around the outside aisle first. That's where all the produce, meats, and dairy products are stored.
