Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) It's the first week of summer and the ice cream business is already heating up.
"A lot of people are excited to come in," said Pop's Sugar Shack employee Brooke Sepelak. "The fact that we do have nice whether now is definitely helping."
This past winter was one of the worst in years, causing more people to come out and celebrate the start of summer with a frozen treat -- after plenty of bouts with local cabin fever.
"It was very cold and the roads were rough," Binghamton resident Jessica Melly said of last winter. "So it was tough, but it's nice to have this warm weather finally."
Bill and Rosalynn Morgan say they go to Pop's Sugar Shack a few times a week.
"We like creamsicle, it's our favorite," said Rosaylnn. "Pops is always a good place to come, and the ice cream, there isn't any better," said Bill.
Humdinger has been dishing out ice cream since 1957.
"We have a few new flavors, we have our strawberry cheesecake that we just got," said Humdinger employee Jenna Ivan. "We have a few other new flavors like 'sweet-n-salty,' which was new last year and it's really popular right now."
Sugar Lips just opened up last summer, but they are staying busy just like the long-time ice cream shops.
"We're always really busy especially when it's hot out, we always have a big line," said Sugar Lips employee Hannah Bideaux. "People are starting to come later since it's summer and kids don't have school."
Among their new flavors, Sugar Lips has "Otto's Cupcake" this season -- an ice cream inspired by Syracuse University's mascot, Otto the Orange.
