Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) With Veterans Day coming up on November 11, the American Legion's National Commander has been touring the country to talk to veterans.
On Sunday afternoon, he stopped in Binghamton to speak at American Legion Post 80.
Commander Daniel Dellinger talked about the challenges veterans face everyday.
He said his biggest concern has been the government shutdown.
"If it would've gone on until November first, you would've seen a ceasing of their benefits, of retiree's benefits," Commander Dellinger said. "These people rely upon their earned benefits to survive."
The commander said that veterans hope the leaders in Washington will come to an agreement by the next budget deadline in early 2014 so that their benefits wont be effected.
Dellinger plans to head to the capital later this year to relay all the concerns he gathered on this trip to the Veterans Affairs Committee.
