Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) They say their goal is to create a more effective form of government that doesn't burden its costs on you.
Representatives from the New York State Assembly Minority Steering Committee met with the public at the Chenango Town Hall.
They're gathering opinions to take back to Albany on unfunded mandates, like what can lower taxes and lower the unemployment rate.
Assemblyman Cliff Crouch, who represents parts of Broome, Chenango, and Delaware Counties, says the Governor's commission on mandate relief is positive, but, more can be done.
"We firmly believe in mandate relief. Government is way too much in people's lives. They're way too much in to businesses and the school system," Crouch said. "That's one of the reason why school costs so much. We're going to keep pushing on it."
Crouch was joined by committee chairwoman Jane Corwin, who represents an assembly district in Western New York outside Buffalo.
She says helping businesses in the Southern Tier is especially important following the devastating floods.
"New York State has struggled for many years in the area of job creation," Corwin said. "That was a problem we were dealing with before and this disaster doesn't help. Our conference is advocating to the governor's office to take some economic development money that's been set aside for the regional councils and put it toward flood relief for businesses."
