(WBNG Binghamton) The Binghamton University announces the death of student, Matthew D. Potel.

Potel died as a result of a hiking accident on Friday, Sept. 30 in the Adirondacks. He is from Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

University Spokesperson Gail Glover says Potel was a senior in Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University. He was majoring in environmental studies and minoring in comparative literature.

Potel was an active member of the Binghamton University Outdoors Club, serving as its co-president for the the past three years. "The role of president is voted on by club members - being voted in as a sophomore - as Matt was - is quite unusual. Matt was also an active Intramural basketball participant," said Glover.

President C. Peter Magrath, speaking on behalf of the University, extended his condolences to Matthew’s friends and family. “Matthew was an important member of the Binghamton University community and we deeply mourn his loss. His death is a shocking tragedy and he will be missed by our entire campus community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.”

Binghamton University counselors have been made available and are working with friends and fellow students as they cope with his death. Students are encouraged to contact the University Counseling Center at 607-777-2772 to speak with a counselor
