BU reformats graduation ceremonies
Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) More than 2,000 Binghamton University seniors will walk across the stage this weekend to receive their diplomas -- something that not all graduates had the opportunity to do in the past. The university is introducing a more individual approach to commencement. Separate ceremonies for each school and college -- including three divisions of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences -- will become the new normal for spring graduates. The modification will not only aid in traffic flow and lodging arrangements for graduates' families, but also add a personal touch to the students' special day. "The ceremonies will be slightly smaller, they'll give every student the opportunity to wear their cap and gown, walk across the stage, get their name read and shake all of our hands," said BU President Harvey Stenger. An honorary degree and PhD hooding ceremony was also held Friday afternoon for the first time to recognize doctoral candidates. Nine ceremonies in total will make up graduation weekend. Four will be held on Saturday for undergraduate and Master's Degree candidates, and three will be held on Sunday.
