Big Savings For New Yorkers

Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy joins Broome County leaders today to discuss how much the governor's mandate reform proposal could save taxpayers.

If approved by legislation, Governor Andrew Cuomo's plan could save Broome taxpayers nearly $8,000,000 during the next 5 years, and nearly $620,000,000 in the next 30 years.

Duffy says Cuomo's mandate proposals should take some weight off the shoulders of local municipalities and counties, allowing them to focus on expanding businesses and creating jobs in the Southern Tier.

The question stands, how does Cuomo plan to save all of this money?

He says the state should take over all Medicaid growth costs over a 3 year period.

Cuomo also says a new pension reform plan will save $619,000,000 for taxpayers and local governments.

"Governor Cuomo stepped in with these two areas, medicaid and pensions. If passed, next year will save money for new employees for pensions, and taking over the growth for medicaid," says Duffy.

Cuomo's budget proposal makes room for $715,000,000 in additional funding for the Southern Tier, along with another $79,000,000 in financial grants.
