Binghamton apartment building catches fire (with photos)
Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A fire broke out Saturday night at a local apartment building. The American Red Cross responded to shelter 41 people overnight at St. Mary’s Recreation Center on Hawley Street. Crews were called to 259 Main St. in Binghamton. The Binghamton Fire Department are still on the scene putting out hot spots. There are 19 apartments in the building. Of those apartments, 17 were occupied. Assistant Fire Chief Steve Faughnan believes the fire started on the third floor of the apartment complex. It then spread into the attic. The decision was made to pull fire crews out of the building due to the roof starting to collapse. Faughnan says the building isn't a total loss. Most of the damage done was to the roof, and the water damage throughout the building due to crews trying to extinguish the flames. Investigators don't know at this point what the cause of the fire was. It is still under investigation. The area will have a police presence throughout the night into Monday according to the fire department. No firefighters were injured during the fire and the Binghamton Fire Department says the residents of the building got out safely. The Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to help tenants. The Red Cross sheltered 41 people overnight on Saturday at St. Mary's Recreation Center on Hawley Street and provided food, clothing, and emotional support.
