Lightning cause of blaze on Airport Road

Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Fire crews spent several hours at 1314 Airport Road after lightning struck and ignited the home.

According to police communications, the fire broke out around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Seven fire crews, including Choconut Center, Prospect Terrace, East Main, town of Chenango, and Endwell, alongside the Broome County Sheriff Department and Union Emergency Medical Services, all responded to the emergency. They remained on scene until 11:15 p.m.

According to Action News crews on scene, it seemed a section of the roof had collapsed and that flames were coming from the roof.

The Choconut Center Fire chief said lightning hit the home and caused significant damage.

The family, who were at home at the time of the fire, were able to get out of the home safely when they heard the lightning strike. There were no injuries.
