Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) City of Binghamton celebrates its completion of a big project, revitalizing its downtown buildings.
In 2008, the Binghamton Local Development Corporation got a $200,000 grant from the New York State Main Street program.
It was used to leverage nearly $460,000 in private investment on 30 downtown revitalization projects.
They are throughout 9 buildings downtown. The projects support economic development and affordable housing opportunities.
"We continue to get people to make investments in our City and that's what these Main Street program grants are all about," said Matthew Ryan (D), Mayor of the City of Binghamton.
The spruce-ups include commercial facade and interior improvements, residential interior renovations and streetscape upgrades.
The focus for the grant was Washington Street, between Hawley and Court and the Main Street and Front Street intersection.
"This grant program has really been a vital piece to helping to restore the main streets and communities in New York State. Our downtown's are a really great way to make those investments to attract other investments throughout our business and commercial districts across the entire city," said Lea Webb (D), Binghamton City Council.
The projects created more than 12 jobs for local construction, engineering and design companies.
