Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A discount program that started in Broome County in 2009 has reached a milestone savings.

The ProAct Prescription Discount Card Program has saved $5 million for county residents.

The card is free of charge and applies to all residents, even if you are already insured.

The cards can be printed from the Broome County website and are accepted at every pharmacy within the county.

"You know the program is critical to a lot of people. A lot of people are out there hurting and when we're able to give then an avenue to possibly get their drugs, because in a lot of cases they would stop taking them." said Broome County Legislator (D) Joseph Sanfilippo.

The prescription discount program not only benefits the residents of Broome County, but also the pets.

The discount cards can also be used for savings on animal prescriptions.
