Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Authorities say the man responsible for an attempted armed robbery at an Owego pharmacy Wednesday is also behind several other Southern Tier thefts.
The Tioga County Sheriff's Office responded just before 7:40 p.m., Wednesday to the CVS Pharmacy at Park and Main streets in the Village of Owego.
One deputy arrived at the pharmacy and spotted a man with a bag in hand leaving the store.
When the second deputy arrived, the man displayed a knife, and fled, according to the sheriff's office.
He was caught and disarmed on the corner of Temple Street and North Avenue a short time later.
Police identified him as John Malowsky, 62, of Attica.
After further investigation, it was determined Malowsky was also responsible for robberies in Corning, Big Flats and Batavia, the sheriff's office said.
He is currently in custody at Wilson Hospital for treatment of injuries.
According to the New York State Sex Offender List, Malowsky was convicted for raping a woman in 1983 in Attica. The list says the incident involved deviate sexual intercourse. Malowsky is listed as a sexually violent offender.
