According to a release from CBS News, Michele Harris went missing the night of Sept. 11, 2001, while the rest of the U.S. was dealing with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Although amidst a bitter divorce, Michele and Cal were living in the same Tioga County house when she vanished after leaving a boyfriend’s house. Harris has been convicted twice of murdering Michele, but both cases have been thrown out on appeal.
For the past 13 years, two opposing sides have been battling in court. Prosecutors have argued Harris killed Michele to protect his family’s wealth, while the defense says investigators never looked closely enough at other potential suspects, like some of the men in Michele’s life.
While speaking with Moriarty, Harris said very few things are worse than going to prison. “You lose your freedom, lose your children, lose everything. It’s - it’s horrible, horrible, horrible experience.”
There are many who still maintain Harris is guilty.
“Twenty four people totally agreed that he was guilty,” said Shannon Taylor, Michele’s sister-in-law. “You cannot get two people to agree on what color your hair is.”
48 HOURS also spoke with the four Harris children, who talked for the first time about their family. “He didn't do it and I want everyone to know that he didn't,” said Cayla Harris.
Harris is now set up with a new defense team who is determined to clear his name during the third trial.
