Calling On State to Restore School Funding

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Unhappy with Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposed state budget, activists are raising their voices to bring money back to public education.

The budget proposes to restore $805 million to education. But it doesn't cover cuts made over the past two years--a third of which will go to a new, competitive grants program.

The Binghamton Chapter of Citizen Action says this forces schools to compete for funding for their students.

They're demanding that the governor reconsider his proposal.

"In the last two years, $2.7 billion have been taken from our schools across the state. These are cuts to classrooms, not bureaucracy--I want to make this very clear," said Lea Webb from Citizen Action.

Citizen Action members say the cuts will be felt locally.

In Broome County, the group says schools have lost $48 million in funding since 2010. According to the group, about $9 million may be restored in the proposed budget.
