Colesville, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Kids of all ages baited, cast and caught fish in a free derby on Saturday.

More than 50 kids hooked worms on their lines in the attempt to catch the biggest and the most fish at the Kids Fishing Derby at Cole Park.

Organizers say this is the 40th year for the derby.

Kids up to 15 years old competed in events to see who was the big fish at the derby.

For some kids, it's the sport, and not the competition, that keeps them casting for more.

"Once you cast it out, you feel the excitement when you feel something nibbling on your hook," said Nathan Asfoury, 9, of the town of Union.

Bill Holmes, president of the Broome County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, says he hopes the derby will inspire youth to take up the sport.

The entire event from registration, to bait and food was free for kids and adults.

The derby was sponsored by the Broome County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs and Broome County Parks.
