Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) More than 500 local students are honored for helping younger students and their peers say yes to good choices.

The 25th annual YES! LEADers Change Lives Recognition Reception was held Thursday night in Endicott.

YES! LEADers are high school and middle school students from Broome, Tioga and Chenango counties who show elementary students the importance of staying away from drugs and alcohol, and making healthy choices.

"Peer pressure works both ways, in this case it works for the positive side. So I think it's great for younger children to hear from older kids that they have a better path without drugs and alcohol," said president and CEO of Lourdes David Patak.

Three student leaders were surprised with scholarships at the reception. One of those students, Shawna Stevens from Afton, said she would never let someone pressure her into making bad choices.

"I would tell them that I wasn't interested, and that they really shouldn't be interested either because the bad choices they're making now may not affect them now but one time it will and it might be too late for them to turn back after that," Stevens said.

YES! Safe Choices for Kids is sponsored by Senator Tom Libous and Lourdes Hospital.
