Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Black bunting is hung on the Johnson City Police Department to show that the department is mourning the loss of one of their own. To help the department with the loss is the JCPD Chaplain.
Patrol Officer David Smith, 43, died in the line of duty on Monday morning.
Fr. Dennis Ruda, of All Saints Church in Johnson City, is the Chaplain for Johnson City Police Department.
Ruda met with JCPD, Binghamton Police and New York State Troopers Monday afternoon after the shooting.
He said the debriefing lasted about a half and hour and there were a lot of officers in attendance seeking some help.
Ruda said it’s important for officers to keep the line of communication open and to make sure that they find a way to relax and spend time with family.
"Try not to dwell on it, which is not an easy thing to do," Ruda said.
Along with his duties of being Chaplain, Ruda also rides eight hours with a patrolman each week, including Officer Smith.
"My words after every shift, no matter who I’m riding with, are, 'We survived another one.' And sad to say it didn't happen for David this morning," Ruda said.
He added that officers on the scene of the shooting may need more time with him to deal with the loss.
Ruda also met with Smith's family Monday morning.
