Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) More than 19.5 million Americans are living in poverty, and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier is fighting to lower that number.
It's teaming up with Wegmans and Tops Friendly Market for its Checkout for Hunger Fundraiser. It's the biggest fundraising event of the year for the food bank.
It's as easy as adding just a few dollars to grocery bills.
Cashiers ask customers if they'd like to donate $2, $3 or $5 to the food bank. There's also the option of rounding up grocery bills to the nearest dollar.
The food bank stresses the importance of donating, as the need for food continues to grow.
"You think about your monthly budget and the one area that's flexible, the amount you allocate for food. Folks shouldn't have to decide whether to pay a bill or buy food," said Missy Goetschius with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
Every penny of the proceeds from the Check Out Hunger Fundraiser is given to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
