Smithville, NY (WBNG Binghamton) New York State Police arrested a Smithville man in connection to a murder at his residence Monday.

Troopers said Kyle Whitefield, 29, was involved in a physical fight with the victim, James Button, Jr., 33, of Greene.

Whitefield is accused of stabbing Button to death at approximately 3:20 p.m. Monday at his residence on Loomis Lane in Smithville.

Whitefield was arraigned in Smithville Town Court and taken to the Chenango County Jail without bail.

Most neighbors were shocked to learn that a murder happened just doors down from their homes.

"I was surprised," said Joyce Errante who lived across the road, "We usually don't have anything like that around here. It's usually peaceful and quiet."

The relationship between Whitfield and Button were not released.

Button lived in the village of Greene on Race Road.

Greene Village Police assisted state police in the investigation.
