Binghamton,NY (WBNG Binghamton) A test of endurance on both wheels and foot is intended to send a big message: Drinking and driving is a deadly practice that is entirely preventable.

The 30th annual Chris Thater Memorial Race is taking place at Recreation Park in the city of Binghamton.

The weekend of racing will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the Men's Master race, and the music festival follows at 10 a.m.

The Thater 5K race will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday. Races with local and elite athletes will carry throughout the weekend.

"Just this year, we've had a cyclist killed by a drunk driver. We've had an intoxicated pedestrian hit by a vehicle and we've had several deaths related to drinking and driving," said STOP DWI Coordinator Chris Marion.

Marion says he'll continue to spread the message to curb drinking and driving, because he says it's still an issue in the community.
