Christians Begin Lenten Season

February 22, 2012 Updated Feb 22, 2012 at 7:41 PM EDT

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Christians around the world begin the solemn season of Lent.

The forty-day period begins with Ash Wednesday services, like one at St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Binghamton's First Ward.

Ashes are placed in the shape of a cross on the foreheads of parishoners signifying repentance.

The faithful typically give up something they enjoy to show solidarity with the suffering of Christ.

The Lenten season ends on Easter Sunday, viewed as the highest holy day among Christians.
