Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Mayor Matt Ryan said it's time City Council paid more attention to the children in Binghamton.
His budget proposal is calling for a new youth program.
It was a topic of discussion at City Council Monday night.
"It's just not about the youth," said Director of the City Youth Bureau Colleen Wagner. "It's just not about the police policing our youth. It's just not about families. It's just not about the school. It's about all of us working together for the betterment of our children."
The program is called YOUMedia.
The project's goal is to keep children off the streets by combining their creativity with technology.
"Our chief of police has said that he would like to see more youth programming in the city of Binghamton," said Wagner. "If he sees it as a need, I think it's important as a community that we see that need."
Ryan is requesting $10,000 for the program to start.
City Council said they want more information before making a vote on whether the program will be supported.
Council requested an in-depth look at where the money would be spent.
