Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The City of Binghamton is working on safety improvements at the corner of Front and East Clinton streets.
The city engineer says a $3 million Highway Safety Improvement grant is making the project possible.
The money will cover the complete cost of the railroad bridge reconstruction and address traffic light upgrades, along with improvements to the Front and Clinton street intersection.
"At that intersection, the accidents at that intersection are over eight times as high as that type of intersection on a statewide average," said city engineer, Philip T. Krey.
The reconstruction of the railroad bridge and intersection project actually began several years ago, but plans were set aside when funding fell through.
This grant will also cover costs of modifying design plans and construction inspections.
The city will start the project in September and it should take one construction season to complete.
