Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) After serving 20 years as Congressman, Maurice Hinchey is bidding farewell.

After his recent battle with colon cancer, Hinchey reluctantly decided in January that it was time to retire.

Hinchey was joined by numerous residents from all across the Southern Tier on Monday evening as they packed a small room to listen to short speeches and support Dan Lamb, the hopeful successor of Hinchey.

When Hinchey spoke, the applause was defening. Lamb praised Hinchey for his hard work and dedication, and several others also spoke on his behaf.

"I deeply appreciate everyone here. I deeply appreciate the opportunity and the fact that I was able to be the person who's working, serving people, straightening things out, trying to make things better, stronger, more effective," said Hinchey.

As Hinchey finishes his term, he is aiding Dan Lamb in the race for the newly created 22nd Congressional District.
