Town of Conklin (WBNG Binghamton) Businesses in Conklin are able to get a first look at the damage and assess whether reopening is even an option for some businesses.

Conklin Town Supervisor Debbie Preston held a meeting this afternoon to discuss how business owners can enter their business, and what precautions need to be taken.

The Town of Conklin has had NYSEG, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and HAZMAT teams checking the area to ensure the townspeople's safety.

The HAZMAT team has already removed more than 16,000 gallons of contamination from Conklin.

Preston says she understands the frustrations, but safety is the number one issue.

"We had to have the HAZMAT teams in there. We had to get this cleared up so we could get them in and just start cleaning out these businesses," says Town of Conklin Supervisor, Debbie Preston.

Just because the water is receeding does not mean it's safe to enter homes and businesses.

Preston says the town will make people in evacuated areas aware when they can enter their homes in a timely manner.
