Conklin, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A fire forced employees out of a Broome County packaging facility just after 12:00 p.m. Friday.

The fire occurred at International Paper, located at 1240 Conklin Rd.

Fire crews were called to the business after flames broke out inside a machine that bundles up used cardboard to be recycled.

Conklin Fire Chief Bill Gorman said employees had already knocked out the fire with a hose by the time fire departments arrived.

The building was evacuated for approximately one hour while crews cleared the smoke and put out burning embers.

The exact cause is still under investigation, but Chief Gorman said it appears a problem with the machine started the fire. No significant damage was reported.

Town of Binghamton, Kirkwood, Hallstead and Five Mile Point fire departments also responded.
