Kirkwood, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Clean up of a contaminated site at the Kirkwood Industrial Park may finally move toward completion.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation held a public meeting on Wednesday to share an updated clean up plan for the former Dover Electronics site.
It is now occupied by Modern Marketing Concepts.
The building was built in the 1970's and chemical contamination impacted both the soil and groundwater. Clean up began in 2000 and since then the majority of contamination has been removed.
The DEC will inject a chemical into the remaining groundwater contamination to break it down so its no longer a hazard, which could take a year to complete.
"The goal is to hopefully at some point be able to de-list a site," said NYSDEC Environmental Engineer Edward Hampston, "And say we no longer have any problems here or any need for monitoring."
Dover Electronics is paying for the cleanup. It sold the site to Modern Marketing Concepts in 2006.
