Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Broome Community College will discuss and possibly vote Thursday on a name change for the college.

The school wants to highlight its affiliation with the State University of New York by adding SUNY into the name, and possibly removing "community college" from its title.

The Board of Trustees will discuss two possible alternatives: SUNY Broome Community College or SUNY Broome.

President Dr. Kevin Drumm said it's not as much of a change in name as a change in tone.

"Our official name is still most likely to be SUNY Broome Community College," Drumm said, "So what we'd be doing is putting some emphasis on the SUNY that's always been there, but not emphasized."

Most students were unaware of the possible changes.

Class of 2013 member Emalee Hyde said a name change could help the school's reputation.

"When people think community college, they definitely think a little less of it," Hyde said. "Broome is a good choice, so it definitely gives it its value."

If a change is approved, the school would take the summer to decide how to implement the new name on signs, letterheads and other university materials.

The meeting will take place at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at in the Libous Room of the Decker Building.

The meeting is open to the public.
