Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The number of reported crime incidents on campus at Binghamton University dropped slightly from 2011 to 2012.

Campus police presented the annual campus safety report to the Binghamton University council on Friday.

There were 1,153 reported incidents in 2012, up slightly from the 1,185, in 2011. There were 889 incident reported in 2010.

"When you consider our growth in enrollment, our growth and the size of the campus and the reach of the campus, the numbers are actually down by 30 reports over the previous year," said Tim Faughnan, Binghamton University's Police Chief. "We view this as stable, level, and considering the enrollment and growth of the University, that's a very good thing," said

Faughnan says serious crimes on campus are low. He says it's quality-of life-issues like disorderly conduct, property damage and harassment that make up the bulk of incident reports.

This year, BU police have implemented a new community policing strategy to enhance campus safety.

"It's a team of officers that work primarily Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights," Faughnan said. "What they do is an early intervention team. They do a lot of community policing work, a lot of interacting with residents, residents assistants and students in general. They go out into the field and look for areas where students are maybe beginning to congregate, maybe the bus stop and so forth. If there are any problems, they intervene early and resolve disputes prior to things getting out of hand."

The most common reported crime in 2012 on campus was petty larceny with 137 reports. There were 99 reports of criminal mischief.

Among the more serious crimes reported last year were 20 burglaries, 28 reports of grand larceny, two rapes, one assault and two arsons.
