(WBNG Binghamton) Governor Andrew Cuomo warned New York tax payers about solicitations involving the School Tax Relief property tax exemption, or the STAR program, as the program is free to register for.

Thursday Cuomo, announced that homeowners have received letters in the mail asking for residents to sign up for a fee.

The fee would be the equivalent of the first year of savings.

The Commissioner of Taxation and Finance warned consumers about the solicitations, and is encouraging them to register on their own.

"If you choose to contract with a third-party service, be sure to do some research on them, either by checking their status through the Better Business Bureau or other resources that are available online or through other means to ensure that you're dealing with someone who is reputable," said Thomas Mattox, the commissioner.

STAR exemptions are the only state-funded property tax exemptions.

The deadline to register is Dec. 31.
