DA candidate Luther challenges Martin to debates

Waverly, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Tioga County is still waiting to name the Republican nominee for county district attorney.

Kirk Martin is in the lead by more an 100 votes, but nearly 250 absentee ballots still have to be counted. That will happen on Friday.

One name that will definitely be on the ticket in November is Democrat Frederick Luther.

Luther said if Martin is the winner, he will challenge him to four debates.

"Kirk Martin has a lot of explaining to do to the public because it's clear from the documents that came out that Mr. Martin abused his position and the public trust for his own benefit," said Luther.

Luther said he has more experience than Martin. Luther was appointed twice as a special prosecutor by the Pennsylvania attorney general.

"One of those cases was a case involving a Pennsylvania State Police officer who broke the law and I prosecuted that case and I treated him the same as anyone else would be treated under those circumstances," said Luther. "There were no special favors."

Luther said the county needs a DA to tackle Tioga's problem with methamphetamine.

He also said he wants to focus on the best interests of victims and bring integrity back to the office.

Luther said if he were to win, he would be the first democrat to hold the district attorney post in Tioga County since the Civil War.

Martin has not returned repeated messages for comments.
