Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A local church reminded people why Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is so important.
Central United Methodist Church has held a Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, every year, for 28 years.
On Sunday, they celebrated this annual celebration with music from the Madrigal Choir of Binghamton and a guest speaker.
They ended the celebration by singing four verses of “We Shall Overcome" and illuminating the church with candles.
Donna Spearman of Central United said she hopes this event reminds people of why Martin Luther King, Jr. was so important.
"Especially the young people," said Spearman.
She hopes that they don't treat tomorrow as just another day off, but rather use it as an opportunity to remember Martin Luther King, Jr's legacy.
"Don't just sit down and accept it as a day off. Do a little reading or look at something on TV if you are not going to participate," Spearman added.
About 75-100 people attended the celebration.
Money raised from the event will go to a new scholarship that will be given to a local student.
