Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) And as students return for the year, it's now easier to obtain financial aid.

New federal legislation could help lessen the burden for student loans.

An overhaul of the federal student loan program will increase Pell grants and make loans easier to repay.

All new loans must now originate through the federal government's Direct Loan program.'

It helps students like Jenna Pollak who is looking to further education post graduation.

" I will be going to medical school in about a year in a half. And I will enter into medical school with a lighter mind on my financial situation because of Pell," said Pollak.

Without the legislation, the maxium Pell Grant was set to be cut in half from about $6,000 n 2010 to about $3,000 in 2011.

According to Congressman Maurice Hinchey, student loan reform will save tax payers $61 billion annually.
