Town of Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) An elderly couple losses their Town of Owego home after it burns to the ground.

Newark Valley First Assistant Fire Chief John Haney said a call for a structure fire came in Sunday just before noon.

When his department arrived on scene at 1511 Dutchtown Road, he said the fire was through the roof and the house was fully engulfed in flames.

Haney said it took about 20 minutes to contain the fire.

A total of eight fire departments responded to the scene.

The situation got worse when the fire spread outdoors.

Haney says it's important to be cautious during this season because the dry weather is causing problems.

"It's extremely dangerous on this side of our area because we have state land," Haney said. "You have lots of foliage on the ground, things like that, that dried over the winter. So, you get lots of spot fires. If they're not attended to, they can start a forest fire."

The home is only half a mile from Oakley Corners State Forest, so additional brush trucks were called in.

Haney said it took the departments 45 minutes to contain the brush fire.

The elderly couple who lives in the home got out safely.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
