Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The debate over police coverage in the village of Endicott continues.
The two sides met twice in July after talks of a potential merger surfaced earlier this summer.
And some officials say the interest in merging the Endicott Police Department with the Broome County Sheriff's Office is waning.
"A resident of the town of Lisle or the town of Sanford or Deposit, should not be paying for police coverage in the village of Endicott," said Endicott Trustee Joe Nirchi. "Every dollar that it costs is going to have to be born by residents of the village."
Back in May, Endicott Mayor John Bertoni said the village was looking to merge its forces with the county. He said the savings would be in the six figures.
Endicott Police Detective Scott Alston said Tuesday negotiations have been going well.
He said the department would like to see more commitment from the village to resolve their differences.
The next step is for the department to issue an official statement asking for their contract to be opened to continue negotiations.
The department's contract is up next May.
Nirchi said he'd be surprised if the issue isn't settled before then.
