Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton University students used their last day of classes to celebrate their mascot, Baxter the Bearcat, on his win as SUNY Mascot of the Year.

Baxter took the top spot in this year's statewide SUNY Mascot contest.

The mascot earned 27,481 votes, just a few hundred more than SUNY Brockport's Ellsworth the Eagle who placed second.

Andrew Loso, a co-founder of the school's pep club BU Zoo, helped organize the campaign to elect Baxter.

"He's fluffy on the outside, but he can definitely be ferocious," Loso said. "And that's what I think makes him the best mascot. He's loveable, he can get down, hug kids, and gives high fives. He'll beat you, he'll win when he has to do it."

Erika Merket, a sophomore, said students were really happy to see Baxter win after nearly reaching the top the year before.

"We were literally running around all day getting votes. We shut down classes, the lectures halls, and had five hundred people voting at a time," Merket said. "We have never been more excited, it was our coolest accomplishment."

Students celebrated with a procession through campus the culminated at the University Union.
