Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The project to expand the student housing on 20 Hawley has been declined.

The Binghamton Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-1 Tuesday night putting a stop to plans to add 180 more beds to the building.

"I wasn't sure which way the board would take it," said Binghamton City Councilman Joseph Mihalko. “I think it's probably a good idea to hold off and try to provide some other parking there.

The debate surrounded interpretation of the city's parking code. Specifically, who should provide it: the city or the privately owned business?

The property is owned by Alfred Weissmann Real Estate, LLC.

They could still appeal the city's vote.

We reached out to Weissmann for a comment, but they did not get back to us in time for this story.
