Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The battle against bed bugs continues at the Broome County Public Library.

That's where a pest control professional delivered a free presentation on how to defeat the bugs.

Expert John Polkowski says the threat of bed bugs is growing.

He says caution, early detection and professional treatment are the best ways to fight the pests.

Polkowski says it takes temperatures of more than 115 degrees to kill the small blood-suckers and their eggs.

He recommends consulting a professional to take care of the job.

"There are so many places that they can hide and there's so many places that you have to treat to get rid of them that as a lay person, you're just not going to know all of the places to look," said Polkowski.

Polkowski says Bed bugs tend to hide in crevices about 5 to 8 feet away from where you sit or sleep, and not everyone gets welts from their bites,

You could be affected and not even know it.
